2023 Pokémon Card Values & Price Guide
2023 is the year the English card changed its look: Scarlet & Violet replaced yellow borders with silver ones, brought back lowercase ex and introduced Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares.

The new rarities
Scarlet & Violet sorted its rarest cards into Illustration Rares, full-art Pokémon shown in a scene; Special Illustration Rares, full-art scenes for ex Pokémon and Supporters; and gold Hyper Rares, each with its own rarity symbol. They are numbered above the main set total. Paldea Evolved's Magikarp Illustration Rare, for example, is #203 in a 193-card set, and it is one of the most valuable 2023 cards in our index.
The ex mechanic also changed: Scarlet & Violet's Pokémon ex are written with a lowercase "ex", like the EX-era cards of 2003–2007 rather than the capitalised Pokémon-EX of the Black & White and XY years, and some are Tera Pokémon ex, whose artwork shows the Pokémon crystallised.
Outside the booster packs
The most valuable 2023 card here is a promo: the Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat (#85), from the Van Gogh Museum's 2023 Pokémon collaboration. Trading Card Game Classic, a premium box that reprinted early cards as three ready-made decks, appears too; its Charizard (#3) sits near the top of our 2023 values, and the Japanese version of its deck has its own set page.
Checking your own card
Most basic Energy cards are worth very little, yet they are among the cards collectors scan most. Before assuming yours is a rare printing, check the number: only a number above the set total marks a secret rare. The same rule finds the Illustration Rares among ordinary cards of the same Pokémon.
For the yellow-bordered cards that came before, see 2022; the Scarlet & Violet era continues in 2024.
