2003 Pokémon Card Values & Price Guide
2003 is the year the English Pokémon TCG changed hands. Wizards of the Coast finished the e-Card series with Aquapolis and Skyridge, and from EX Ruby & Sapphire onwards the cards were produced by Pokémon USA and distributed by Nintendo of America — with a new card design and a new kind of Pokémon, the Pokémon-ex.

The last two Wizards sets
- Aquapolis (January 15, 2003) combined two Japanese e-Card sets, The Town on No Map and Wind from the Sea, and introduced Crystal Pokémon. Its Ponyta #102 is the 2003 card scanned most in TCG Value Scanner.
- Skyridge (May 12, 2003; 182 cards) was the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast. Its Crystal Pokémon, such as Crystal Charizard, are the set's best-known cards.
Both sets number their holo rares in a separate series, from H1/H32 to H32/H32. The same Pokémon usually also exists as a non-holo rare with an ordinary number, so a card numbered with an "H" is the holo copy and is valued on its own.
Nintendo's first sets
- EX Ruby & Sapphire (June 18, 2003) brought in the third generation and the first Pokémon-ex, written with a lowercase "ex". A Pokémon-ex is stronger than an ordinary card and gives up two Prize cards when knocked out. Sneasel #103 from this set is the second most scanned 2003 card in the app.
- EX Sandstorm followed in September with more Hoenn Pokémon; Zangoose #14, Ludicolo #7 and Lunatone #8 are among its most valuable cards here.
- EX Dragon (November 24, 2003) has 97 numbered cards plus three secret rares — Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard at 98, 99 and 100. The Charizard at 100/97 is the most valuable 2003 card in this guide; Absol #1 comes next.
What changed on the card
The EX series also brought a new card frame. None of the English sets of 2003 had a 1st Edition run — the last one was Neo Destiny in 2002 — so the stamp plays no part in valuing a 2003 card. What matters instead is the finish: most cards also exist as reverse holos, with the foil outside the artwork, and those are valued separately from the plain card.
The e-Card series began with Expedition in 2002; the EX series continued through 2004 and beyond.
